Unmarried Couples:
Couples living together do not have the same rights as couples who are married.
Parties living together do not mean that they are "common law husband and wife" as in English law there is no such thing.
The issues that may need to be considered by unmarried couples include:-
• Buying a house together - parties may wish to enter into a Cohabitation Contract which determines what would happen to the property if the parties were to separate.
• If you are seperating and the finances need resolving, we suggest you seek legal advice. Just because your name is not on the title deeds to the property does not mean that you have no claim against such.
• Children - please see the children section
• Domestic Violence - please see the domestic violence section
